The joy of motherhood of the main character is overshadowed by tragedy – her newborn son is seriously ill and needs an urgent expensive operation. A senior official, Cyril, with whom Vari had a harrowing love affair for years, refuses to acknowledge paternity and help save the child’s life. Varya faces a dramatic choice: abandon his son and give him up for adoption to the family of a wealthy lover, where he will receive full treatment, or try to fight to the end. But then even her only support – the doctor of the maternity hospital Yaroslav – cannot guarantee that the child will survive.
